Doug Wheeler, Eindhoven, Enviornmental Light Installation, 1969. Collection of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington. Note: That’s an actual, unaltered photograph of an actual room-sized Wheeler installation. No digital trickery. That’s what it looks like.
This week’s Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Doug Wheeler, one of the pioneers of light-and-space art. So far as I know, this week’s show is just the third one-on-one interview Wheeler has ever given.
A Wheeler ‘infinity environment’ installation is on view now at Chelsea’s David Zwirner gallery, where visitors have routinely waited in line for an hour (and often longer) to see the piece. A major Wheeler was just acquired by the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, which featured Wheeler prominently in its light-and-space survey “Phenomenal.” The museum’s new Wheeler will be on view in downtown San Diego until August.

Here’s a look at Amine el Khalifi, the somewhat hapless would-be suicide bomber that was caught up in an F.B.I sting operation this week.
El Khalifi thought he was headed to the U.S. Capitol building armed with a handgun and a vest full of high explosives. What he found out though, was that the F.B.I. has been tracking him form months, drawing him into a phoney terror plot.
The vest and gun were harmless but El Khalifi intentions were anything but. El Khalifi has been charged with attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction against U.S. property.
Interestingly, el Khalifi’s former landlord told reporters that he had tried to alert Virginia police about his tenant’s tendencies a year ago but that his tips to law enforcement were ignored.

One of the classic bits of Americana at the Smithsonia is taking a bit of a breather.  After a long period on pubic view Dorthy Gale’s Ruby Slippers from the 1939 film, The Wizard of OZ have been removed for conservation work.
The world-famous footwear is scheduled to return to exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History in April.

Gruesome… No word on the identity yet or whether the death is assumed to be the result of foul play. So far DC police are calling a death - rather than homicide - investigation.
